Goodwood Park Hotel Assorted Snowskin Mooncakes 2012

Every year at this time of the year, Chinese normally enjoy the Mid Autumn Festival with Mooncakes.

Over the years, the way this festival has evolved is quite interesting. In the olden days, people used to savour mooncakes and tea while gazing at the (round) moon. In addition, tradition Mooncakes itself has also evolved The filling inside used to be made from lotus paste with an egg yolk in the middle.

Today, even the crust has changed. There are Snowskin Mooncakes that comes in different flavours and must be chilled. The fillings made from paste from durian, banana, mango, chocolate, green tea and many others. There are also deep fried flaky Mooncakes with yam fillings, ice cream Mooncakes and more. We are so spoilt for choices on the type of Mooncakes to buy.

As for me, it is becoming a habit for me to go to Goodwood Park to buy its Snowskin Mooncakes.
Assorted Snowskin Mooncakes $52
Assorted Snowskin Mooncakes $52 - (Clockwise from Top Left: Cempedak, Blood Orange with Banana, D24 Durian, Mango with Pomelo)
There are different types of mooncakes to choose from. As usual, I ordered the Assorted Snowskin Mooncakes.
Blood Orange with Banana Snowskin Mooncake
The Blood Orange with Banana Snowskin Mooncake is one of the two new creation by Goodwood Park Hotel. It is made from red orange pulp with banana. If you are wondering, the other creation is the Mao Shang Wang Snowskin Mooncake.
Mango with Pomelo Snowskin Moocake
D24 Durian Snowskin Mooncake
Cempedak Snowskin Mooncake
The Mango with Pomelo, D24 Durian and Cempedak Snowskin Mooncakes are a yearly feature due to their popularity.

Overall, I still like Goodwood Park Hotel's Snowskin Mooncakes. Their Mooncakes are filled with not just rich creamy paste of the respective fruits but also chunks of the fruits to enhance the flavour and texture with each  bite. The different combination of fruity flavours provided a balance in taste, was refreshing. In addition, the snowskins (crust) are so soft.

Furthermore, the Snowskin Mooncakes are made with no preservatives and will need to be consumed within 3 days after purchase. They will need to be stored in the freezer after purchase.
Tote Thermal bag
Tote Thermal bag (interior)
This year, Goodwood Park Hotel has changed the tote thermal bag. It is still yellow colour as yellow has been the signature colour for the hotel's mooncake packaging since 2007. With this Tote Thermal Bag, the mooncakes will be kept cool for an hour after purchase. This is to ensure freshness and allow customers to bring it back home to store in their freezer. Also, these bags are re-usable.

For more details on the different flavours, prices and discounts for the mooncakes, please refer to their website.

Four Seas Fried Mee & Rice•Fried Hor Fun (Albert Centre Market & Food Centre)

Four Seas Fried Mee & Rice•Fried Hor Fun is located in Albert Centre Market & Food Centre, near Bugis Junction.
The Seafood Hor Fun (Hor Fan) comes in either $3.00 / $4.00 /$5.00. I ordered the $4.00 version. I waited 25 minutes for it. It is self service. If you are ordering from this stall, I would suggest for you to be seated just in front of the stall so that you know when it is ready. Part of the reason why there is such a long wait was because they consolidate the orders and fried at least 15 plates of Hor Fan at one go. Hor Fun and gravy (with all the other ingredients in it) was cooked separately. The Hor Fun was first put onto the plates, then the gravy and ingredients were drizzled over it depending on the order size. Once that is done, it is ready to be collected.
Seafood Hor Fun $4.00
Seafood Hor Fun $4.00
When I saw that they prepared so many plates at one time and cooked the Hor Fun and Gravy separately, I immediately had a negative thought 'sure not nice..'. To my surprise the Seafood Hor Fun was delicious. I was impressed. Generous amount of ingredients were given such as prawns, squid, vegetable, meat, slice fish and egg.

The fish slices given were very fresh, soft and smooth. The sweetness of the fish meat further reinforced the freshness. In addition, the squid and prawns were not overcooked and were fresh. The gravy was tasty, flavourful and forgiving.

Despite the long wait and also the fact that the Hor Fun and Gravy were cooked separately, this is a very decent plate of Seafood Hor Fan. The freshness and generosity of the ingredients given certainly played a role.

761 Yishun Seafood - Zi Char

761 Yishun Seafood is a zi char stall in Yishun near my home. I seldom post on any zi char stalls especially those near home. But recently, this one caught my eye impressed me.
During dinner time,  761 Yishun Seafood can get very crowded and waiting time for food may vary between 10minutes to 30minutes. In this post, I will consolidate all the food I have eaten over the past few days.
Shrimp Omelette $8
The Shrimp Omelette was a tad too oily. Despite that, it was sinfully delicious! The omelette was cooked perfectly; soft and fluffy. A few more seconds on the wok, it would have been overcooked; hard and dry. Something to point out, it is actually prawn omelette not shrimp.
'Fu Yong' Fried Egg $6
'Fu Yong' Fried Egg did not disappoint too. Just that it was a tad too oily.
Baby Kai Lan with Oyster Sauce $6
Baby Kai Lan with Oyster Sauce was well-cooked. The Kai Lan was still crunchy with oyster and garlic flavour coating it. Akin to a simple home-cooked dish. Nice.
Assorted Vegetables $8
Another simple home cook fare; the Assorted Vegetables. Mixture of vegetables, button mushrooms, squid and prawns so value for money.
Lemon Chicken $8
Lemon Chicken was my least favourite dish. Not because it was cooked badly, but more of personal preference. I like my fried chicken with spices or with batter, but not with lemon.
Fried Rice $8
The Fried Rice was again a tad too oily. But still it was yummilicious! Lots of ingredients and each cut into a similar size as the rice grains so that the texture is similar. In addition, there was a hint of wok hei coating each grain of rice. Very well fried!
Hor Fun w/Egg $4
The Hor Fun w/Egg was impressive. The gravy was delicious and not too salty packed with wok-hei flavour.

The food at 761 Yishun Seafood is what I call cheap and good. It is affordable and delicious. Did I add that this Zi Char Stall has been around for 26 years? Yes, 26 years!

San Low Seafood Restaurant 三楼海鲜园 (Malaysia, Johor Bahru) 2nd Post

My 2nd visit to San Low Seafood Restaurant 三楼海鲜园 in a space of a week. As this is a 2nd post, I will not re-introduce the restaurant here. The first post can be found here
photo from previous visit
Not too crowded as it was a Monday evening. Again, there were several Singapore plated cars parked at the side of the restaurant.

Selected portion of the menu.

San Low Fried Bee Hoon RM9
A visit to San Low Restaurant 三楼海鲜园 is not completed without its signature San Low Fried Bee Hoon (rice vermicelli). Delish!
Fu Yong Egg (Omelette) RM6 (S)
The Fu Yong Egg (Omelette) was disappointing. It was hard, rough, tough and oily.
La La RM12 (S)
The La La dish was just well average.
Salted Egg Crab RM56
The Salted Egg Crab was delicious. It was well executed. It does not have creamy gravy unlike how what other restaurants serve this dish. The salted egg coating the crab was just nice. Not overly salty and very addictive. The crabs were fresh and meaty. The meat easily pulled out from its shell was sweet, juicy and tender. Enjoyed the dish.

This time round, some hits and misses. The items to go for will still be the Chilli / Salted Egg Crabs and the San Low Fried Bee Hoon.

There this marks the end of my JB posts for now. My main objective for this series of posts is to answer the question I have always been pondering about 'What to eat in JB (Johor Bahru)'? Part of the consideration is the distance from the Woodlands Check Point and (of course) Cheap and Good!

[Oppa] Gangnam Style - Singapore Style!

My first non-food post.
The Official Version - by Korea Singer (rapper) Park Jae-Sang also known as PSY who started this craze with this single 'Gangnam Style'. Since its release on Youtube on 15 July 2012, it has received over 38million hits and has made its way to even CNN. For Running Man fans, did you know that Yoo Jae-Seok made a cameo appearance in the dance duel with PSY at the carpark (1:43 min of video). (why did he not wear Green!?)

PSY even held a competition and asked people to create their own spoof videos. The winner with the best video will get to win his Korea concert tickets and also meet him.
Gangnam Style - The Singapore Version (Singapore Style). This was filmed in a day by Toxien (a local Korean company) with a budget of less than $10 as the team travelled via public transport.

Another Singapore Version

American Version by a Korean-America Jun Sung Ahn with his violin. This is the video selected PSY himself as the winner of the competition.

Oppa Daegu Style

Hongdae Style

Oppa is Just My Style (from a woman's perspective). Sang by 4Minute Member, Hyuna with PSY released on 14 August 2012 with over 10million hits in a short time span of 4 days.

Marmalade Pantry at the Stables (Fairways Drive)

The Marmalade Pantry at ION Orchard has always been attracting a large crowd during meal times. With its success, Marmalade Pantry has opened another outlet called Marmalade Pantry at the Stables at Fairways Drive. It is located near Bukit Timah Saddle Club and Riders Cafe.

Marmalade Pantry at the Stables is located away from the city. I felt as if I was transported back to the past when there was no tall buildings and am at the country side surrounded by greenery. But of course with this, Marmalade Pantry at the Stables is located at a remote location and you would need to either drive or take a cab in. A quiet place for a relaxing evening, perfect for a date.

In the interior with its tall windows, high ceilings and cushion seats, it gives a modern colonial feel. The tables, chairs, utensils and cups were well arranged with precision.
Salad: The Mexican Chicken Salad $22
Salad: The Mexican Chicken Salad $22
The first thought when I saw The Mexican Chicken Salad with Crispy Tortilla, Avocado, Spiced Corn and Salsa was that, for such ingredients, they presented it so well. The different combination of ingredients resulted in contrasting texture(soft, crispy, chewy) with each bite. In addition, each mouthful was packed with different flavours.
Salad: Pan Seared Haloumi $21
The Pan Seared Haloumi was served with Roma Tomatoes and Watercress Herb Salad. It was well presented. The Haloumi is a semi-hard cheese made from a mixture of goat's, sheep's or/and cow's milk. One of its (Haloumi) unique characteristics is its high melting point. Hence, it is often (suitable) fried or grilled. The Haloumi has a similar appearance to beancurd. In terms of taste, it had a delicate smokey and salty flavour. The saltiness was balanced with the sweetness from the fresh juicy Roma Tomatoes and Watercress.
Meat & Fish: Crispy Pork Belly $32
Meat & Fish: Crispy Pork Belly $32
Crispy Pork Belly with Celeriac and Apple Slaw, French Mustard and Natural Jus. It was well seasoned but lack the crispiness as the layer of skin (fat) was removed. It was also too dry for my liking. This dish reminded me of the Kalua Pork at Charly's T which was executed differently.
Meat & Fish: Braised 120 Days Grain Fed Beef Cheeks $32
Braised 120 Days Grain Fed Beef Cheeks with Horseradish Mash, Field Mushrooms and Pearl Onions was well executed. The Beef Cheeks were braised to perfection and were incredibly tender and flavourful with melt-in-your-mouth sensation.
Pasta & Risotto: Spaghetti Cabonara $24
The Spaghetti Carbonara with Poached Egg and Flat Parsley was a cream based pasta topped with shredded crispy bacon bits.
Pudding: Lemon Brulee Tart $14
The Lemon Brulee Tart will be a dish that you either love or hate. Thin crispy golden caramelised crust coated on the top of the moist lemon tart provided a mixture of texture. The mix of sweetness and sourness was just right for me. No wonder there is this saying 'there's always room for dessert'. Despite feeling so full, I could not resist second and third bites.
Cakes & Tarts: Sea Salt Caramel Cheesecake $8
The Sea Salt Caramel Cheesecake will also be a dish you either love or hate. Initially, my first thought was that this would be too heavy a dessert. Those who know me will know that I am not a fan of cheese cake. Yet this cheesecake was so good. The flavour of cheese was very forgiveable and not did not overwhelm the other flavours. In addition, it was light and dense with walnuts and a crumbly base with a hint of caramel saltiness. One of the best cheesecakes I have eaten!
Cupcakes: Red Velvet Cake $4.50
The Red Velvet Cake with Coconut Cream Cheese Frosting was unique as it was topped with grated coconut. Moreover, no red food colouring was added. Instead, the deep red colouring came from beetroot juice. Personally, I prefer a more moist cupcake and the addition of the coconut did not suit my taste preference.

There was hits and misses. Out of all the dishes, I was most impressed with the Braised 120 Days Grain Fed Beef CheeksLemon Brulee Tart and Sea Salt Caramel Cheesecake. Looks like a great place for a meal away from the fast-paced city life.

Thank you Amanda (FoodNews) for invite and hosting.

Teck Sing Restaurant 德星茶餐室 (Malaysia, Johor Bahru)

Teck Sing Restaurant 德星茶餐室 is a well known Chinese restaurant offering sumptuous dishes at affordable prices. It has several signature dishes, it's most famous signature dish is the Teck Sing Paper Wrapped Chicken.

Teck Sing Restaurant 德星茶餐室 is located at Taman Sentosa, 5 minutes away from Plaza Sentosa; a shopping mall. The restaurant is around 15 minutes walk from Taman Sri Tebrau Hawker Centre. (refer to map at bottom of the post). Yet again, the easiest way is to board the cab and inform the driver that you would like to go to 'Taman Sentosa'. It is just 10 minutes drive from Causeway / City Square and the cab fee  will cost around RM7. (Request for the metre to be activated before boarding cab.)
Teck Sing competitor is just next door (at the left of the restaurant) called Bamboo Restaurant which also specialises in serving paper wrapped chicken. Years ago, Bamboo Restaurant's version was more popular. However over the years, the standard has dropped. Today, Teck Sing is clearly the better player.
Clean, simple air conditioned environment. The restaurant is very spacious occupying 2 ground floor units of the shop house. As we visited on a weekday late morning, the restaurant was still relatively empty. However, by lunch time, the place was more than 70% full. Not an easy feat considering that it was a Monday.

Teck Sing Paper Wrapped Chicken 德星药材纸包鸡 RM18
Teck Sing Paper Wrapped Chicken 德星药材纸包鸡 aka Yao Cai Ji was served pipping hot. It was wrapped in  thick superior paper and baked for several hours with various Chinese herbs. Once the paper was torn apart, the fragrance and aroma will start rising up and tease your senses.
Teck Sing Paper Wrapped Chicken 德星药材纸包鸡 RM18
Teck Sing Paper Wrapped Chicken 德星药材纸包鸡 used kampung chicken. The chicken was incredibly fresh, soft, tender and juicy. Fork tender; the flesh fell part from the bones easily. What a delicious and delectable dish. The best Yao Cai Ji I have ever had. A must order!
Kang Kong with Sambal Chilli RM8
The Kang Kong with Sambal Chilli was amazingly delicious. It was well cook and the Kang Kong was still crunchy. The Kang Kong with Sambal Chilli strangely was more sweet than spicy with fragrance of garlic. Despite that, this dish was so savoury and delicious that we polish it off within minutes. What a surprising yummlicious dish.
Drunken Prawn in Claypot RM20
The size of the prawn compared to the bowl!
Another signature dish at Teck Sing is the Drunken Prawn in Claypot. The drunken prawns were cooked in herbal broth along with slices of spring onion and ginger. The broth was delish; herbal and sweet in flavour. As for the prawns, there were huge and extremely fresh. It was easy to deshell them. Moreover, the meat was firm, succulent and sweet. Excellent!
Soup of the Day: Peanuts with Chicken Feet Soup RM5
The Soup of the Day was Peanuts with Chicken Feet Soup. Even though the Drunken Prawns in Claypot has broth, we decided to order this soup too as few places serve this soup now. This soup is one of the most traditional Chinese soup with great nutritional value. At RM5, this is a steal. The Peanuts with Chicken Feet Soup tasted great! The soup was robust and rich in flavour. The chicken feet were simmered till tender, yet not too soft and not too hard. Eight chicken feet were given and yes, I polished them all. I am a great fan of chicken and duck feet! Even if you do not eat the chicken feet, you can still order this soup. The soup itself is delicious and is rich in collagen too. (Collagen is a protein with many benefits such as anti-ageing, repair skin, repair tissues and strengthen bones)

Before calling for the bill, ordered the signature Teck Sing Paper Wrapped Chicken 德星药材纸包鸡 again. This time for take-away. To bring it back to Singapore. I carried the chicken all the way from 2pm to 9pm till I reached home.
Teck Sing Paper Wrapped Chicken 德星药材纸包鸡 RM18
Once you have reached home, tear out the paper slowly and put the chicken along with the sauce and herbs into a container/bowl. Store it in the fridge if you are eating it the next day. Before eating, all you have to do is to steam it hot. Shiok!

Overall, the food at Teck Sing Restaurant 德星茶餐室 was amazingly delicious. I like all the dishes that were ordered nd they were so affordable. Service wise, the food was served promptly. Even when I went back 1 week later to just order the chicken for takeaway, it was nicely packed and given to me within 5 minutes. Furthermore, there is free wifi at this restaurant. If I am living nearby, I think I will be going there weekly!
