Dessert Bowl 一碗甜品 (Serangoon Gardens)

Dessert Bowl 一碗甜品 as its name suggests is a shop that specialises in desserts. This shop tucked away at the second level of a shophouse, in the heart of Serangoon is a hidden gem! With less than 5 years since its inception, this dessert place has won the hearts of many of my friends with some claiming that this is one the best dessert shop!

I have not heard of this place till recently. I was also quite skeptical as even as I made my way to the shop. It was next to a KTV, the shop signage (above) was not (how should I put it..) inviting. In addition, the surroundings was dark and quiet.
Once you get past the first entrance, there was a steep flight of concrete stairs with no one in sight. I would have turned back if I was alone or did not trust the source. Luckily, we braved on continued on and ventured into the darkness.
At the second level, the contrast was distinct! The dessert shop was bright, vibrant, bustling and full of people. Phew!
The decoration of the place was unique and impressive. Old Hong Kong theme with several displays showcasing miniature stalls of what looked like Hong Kong's Cha Chaan Teng in the olden days. It was captivating as the details were not left out.
Dessert Bowl is essentially a small dessert place with a small seating capacity. It was very noisy as there was no absorbent material used. The concretes walls and glass displays coupled with the small area amplified the noise. It was extremely difficult to have conversations in such an environment.
Menu cover
The menu cover had a cute baby smiling out, enticing customers. The most common words you would hear at this point in time would be 'Oh, so cute~!'.
Durian Mousse $5
Durian Mousse $5
The Durian Mousse $5 was highly recommended. It did not disappoint. It was served with durian flesh added on top of the durian mousse. The durian mousse was perfect; of the right consistency. It was light and smooth with small chunks of durian in it. In addition, the flavour of the durian was not overwhelming. With the addition of the durian flesh on top, it was literally the 'icing on the cake'.

This Durian Mousse is a must try! It hit the right elements in all aspects and was utterly delicious! Coming from a non durian fanatic, I think that this speaks volume! (Those who have read my previous posts would have know that I am not a fan of durian)
Aiyu Mango $4.20
Aiyu Mango $4.20
The Aiyu Mango $4.20 was one of their bestsellers. It consisted of mango puree, aiyu jelly and coconut milk. This was another refreshing yummlicious dessert. Each of the three ingredients complemented each other well.

To conclude, Dessert Bowl 一碗甜品 is the place for dessert! I would highly recommend the Durian Mousse even if you are not a fan of durian, you should give this a try. Do not under estimate the crowd at this dessert place. As we were leaving at 1030 pm, a queue had formed near the stairwell. Do note that the ambience is not ideal as it can get very noisy.

Goodwood Park Hotel Durian Fiesta 2012 - Dessert Buffet

The Goodwood Park Hotel Durian Fiesta is back again. The dessert buffet is available from 26 May to 31 July 2012 at the Coffee Lounge during lunch and dinner time. Over the past few years, during this period, I would buy their Durian Puffs from their booths in shopping centres.

This time round, I decided to try out the dessert buffet. There were a variety of durian and non-durian items available.

Durian Cappuccino Cake, Durian Mousse Cake, Durian Puff

Durian Cappuccino Cake, Mini Chocolate or Vanilla Waffle Cones filled with Durian Mousse

Durian Pancake, Durian Mousse Cake, Durian Pengat with Glutinous Rice and Gula Melaka
Here comes the non-durian part.
Raspberry Mascarpone Cake, Caramel Vanilla Cream Puff

Chocolate Tart with Mixed Fruits
Bread & Butter Pudding
Kueh Lapis, Nonya Kueh
Fruits, Movenpick Ice Cream

Clockwise from top left: Durian Pengat with Glutinous Rice with Gula Melaka,  Durian Mousse Cake, Durian Cappuccino Cake, Durian Puff
The new item; Durian Pengat with Glutinous Rice was disappointing as the rice was dry and hard. The Durian Mousse Cake which has been their signature item since 1983 did not disappoint. Soft, fluffy cake with lots of durian mousse on it. It was just right, rich yet not overly sweet nor heavy. The Durian Cappuccino Cake introduced last year (2011), was equally good. Coffee lovers will like this. The Durian Puff continue to be one of my favourites, had several helping of it.
Clockwise from top left: Bread & Butter Pudding with Vanilla Sauce,  Mini Chocolate and Vanilla Waffle Cones filled with Durian Mousse, Chocolate Tart with Mixed Fruits, Durian Pancake
I am not a big fan of Bread & Butter Pudding, but Goodwood Park's version was good! Give the Mini Chocolate and Vanilla Waffle Cone filled with Durian Mousse a skip. The cones were not crispy having been left out there for too long. Besides, the durian mousse is similar to those on other items. The Chocolate Tart with Mixed Fruits was hard and dry. The Durian Pancake was freshly made on the spot.
Pulut Hitam
Barley with Ginko Nut & Quail Egg
There were also 2 traditional hot desserts available; the Pulut Hitam and Barley with Ginko Nut & Quail Egg. The Pulut Hitam was normal. Whereas the Barley with Ginko Nut & Quail Egg was unique as it came with Quail Egg!
Mango with Pomelo and Sago
Besides fruits and ice cream, there was Mango with Pomelo and Sago too.

I did not enjoy the buffet as much as what I would have expected. The main reason was because after trying out several items I felt sick of the food as the filling were the same (durian mousse). It was a case of durian overdose. To think that I had only one helping of the items except for the durian puffs which I took 3. I will just stick back to the buying of the durian puffs when they setup shop in shopping centres.

As you can see read from this post, I am not such a big fan of durian. If you are a durian lover, you will love this dessert buffet!

The prices for the Durian Fiesta are:
- $32.80++ (Dessert Buffet)
- $26.80++ (Top-up with any a la carte main course order)
- $48.80++ (Taiwan Porridge a la carte buffet with dessert buffet)
Note, this is only available during lunch and dinner timings daily.
