Huat Kee Kway Chap 發記馃汁 (Yishun)

Huat Kee Kway Chap 發記馃汁 is located in a coffeeshop at a quiet neighbourhood in Yishun. Although it is not located near the MRT station, this Kway Chap stall is relatively popular. 
This stall is so popular that they nearly alway sell out their food way before closing time. When I visited on a weekday, they started closing the stall at 11.10 am! Yes, that is how popular they are. 
Although we visited at 10.30am, which is no considered a peak period, we had to wait more than 30 minutes for our food. I cannot imagine the waiting time on weekends.
The broth of the  kway teow, which was light brown, had a tasty and savoury taste. Also, there was a distinct herbal flavour.
We ordered quite a few items to accompany the kway chap. The items were accompanied by a rich and savoury flavoured gravy. Also, the pork belly were tender and soft. I enjoyed dipping them into the homemade chilli which added a refreshing tangy twist to the items.

If you intend to try this, do remember to come early!

Ah Hua Kway Teow 亚华粿條(Malaysia, Johor Bahru)

Ah Hua Kway Teow 亚华粿條 is a Teochew kway teow soup eatery located 10 minutes walk from the causeway. In fact, it is near Hua Mui Coffee Shop and Hiap Joo Bakery
You can find Ah Hua Kway Teow 亚华粿條, by looking out for the big signage "Restoran Sekee". It is essentially the only stall operating in this coffeeshop/restoran.
Inside, there is a big seating capacity which can easily fit in 40 customers. When I visited on a Tuesday morning at 10 am, it was not crowded. There was less than 10 customers.  
There was just 2 person manning the stall. The lady took the orders, prepare the ingredients and cook them. Once the food was ready, a man would then deliver it to the table and collect the money. 
What caught our attention was this. The broth and ingredients were cooked over the charcoal stove! Wow, I really wonder how she manage and control the heat!
In terms of product offerings, it is simple. Just 2 sizes (i.e. small bowl for RM8 and big bowl for RM16). Of course you can choose the type of noodles and whether it should be dry or wet version etc.

Since I rarely visit Johor Bahru these days, I went for the RM16 (big) soup version. For the RM16 version, customers can choose for more ingredients or oysters. I chose more ingredients. 

When the bowl of kway teow arrived, I was surprised... because of the food presentation. The ingredients were were presented neatly. Noodles and meat slices were underneath. Liver slices were placed at one sie while kidney slices were on the other side. It was even topped with a piece of seaweed, that was placed at the top of the pile of kidney.

The Kway Teow RM16 was served with lots of kidney and liver slices, lean meat, minced meat, kway teow (noodles), pork lard, shallotand topped with seaweed. She was really very generous with the ingredients. There was more than 6 thick slices of kidney!

The kidney tasted difference from those that I had before. There was no yucky after taste and it was jelly like. Normally, when you cooked kidney soup, the flavour would overwhelm any other flavour in the broth. But for this version, it did not happen. Having said this, I must say that the broth was disappointing. Although it was cooked in pork bone over a charcoal stove, it was quite bland tasting, with just a mild-sweet flavour. Also, I had expected a smokey fragrance as it was cooked over a charcoal stove.. but that was clearly missing. I guess I had my expectations too high.

I noticed that most people ordered the dry version which comes with lots of orangey sauce. Maybe I should have ordered the dry version instead! (anyone ate that before?)

Cheng Heng Kway Chap and Braised Duck Rice 進興粿汁.鹵鴨飯 (Holland Drive Market & Food Centre)

Cheng Heng Kway Chap and Braised Duck Rice 進興粿汁.鹵鴨飯 is a kway chap stall located in Holland Drive Market & Food Centre. Although this food centre (hawker centre) is relatively big, ironically this stall is located right next to another kway chap stall; Blanco Court Kueh Chap.
To be frank, I was not sure which stall was better. Like a typical Singaporean, I went for the one with a longer queue! 
The stall was manned by two ladies. Since I already ate fishball noodles 15 minutes earlier, I decided to just order the Kway Chap set which cost $3.50 without adding other ingredients.
The bowl of kway (flat and broad rice sheet) was soft and smooth. What caught my attend was the broth in which the kway was soaked in. The broth was tasty with a hint of herbal after-taste. Moreover, it was not overly salty.

As for the plate of mixed intestines, the pork belly, intestines and salted vegetables were above average. Particularly, the pork belly had a good ratio of fat to lean meat with a melt in the mouth sensation.

Overall, the kway chap at this stall is one of the better ones around. While it may not be the very best, it hit the right notes for several of their ingredients/items.

Blanco Court Food Centre(3rd Storey) Kway Chap 多丽哥粿汁 (Old Airport Road Food Centre)

Blanco Court Food Centre(3rd Storey) Kway Chap 多丽哥粿汁 located at Old Airport Road Food Centre is a well-known Kway Chap stall. There is always a queue at this stall.
I visited at around 230 pm on a weekday and yet there was a queue of around 8 persons.
This is the menu.
The kway was surprisingly decent and hits all the right notes in terms of taste and texture. The kway (flat and broad rice sheet) was soft and smooth.
I requested for braised lean meat, pig intestine (small and big) and eggs. I dare say that this is one of the best kway chap stalls I have had! There was no unpleasant smell in the braised pig intestine (big and small) which were washed clean. Also, I like how they gave the part where the lean meat comes with soft bones as this part is normally more tender. Furthermore, the braised sauce (dark sauce) was tasty and not salty.

Kway Chap 粿汁 (Blk 93, Toa Payoh)

This Kway Chap 粿汁 stall at Blk 93, Toa Payoh Lor 4 is apparently very famous. From what I was told, there would nearly always be a long queue at this stall. 
This stall opens at 530pm for business. True enough when we got arrived at 730pm on a Friday, there was a queue of around 12 persons. We queue moved extremely slow. We queued for nearly 35 minutes before it was our turn to order. And by then, some of the more popular items such as pig tongue were sold out!

By the time we collected our food, we were starving! The Kway Chap cost $11 (note that 2 other bowls of kway is not in the above photo).

The bowl of Kway (flat and broad rice sheet) was just average. It was not soaked in the broth long enough an the broth taste more salty than tasty/flavourful.
Braised Pig Intestines (small)
The Braised Pig Intestines (small) were washed so clean that the insides were nearly all washed off and lacked any taste except for the saltiness which came from the braising sauce.

As for the rest of ingredients such as the braised egg, tau pok, beancurd and braised pig intestines, they were just average. The fish cake was quite decent.

Needless to say, I am not going to queue so long for this next time.

Lao San Kway Chap 老三棵汁·猪什汤 (Ang Mo Kio)

Lao San Kway Chap 老三棵汁·猪什汤  is a Kway Chap stall located at a coffeeshop at Blk 232 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3. In case you are wondering why the address seems to be familiar, it is because this is the same block as where Melben Seafood is located. 
Lao San Kway Chap has been highly raved about by many through word of mouth and on the internet. There was a queue of 7 person on a Sunday morning.
Unfortunately, the large intestines were already sold out. So fast! Considering that I visited at 915 am.
I ordered a bowl of Kway and also a plate of braised pig intestines (small), pig skin, fish cakes and tau pok (fried tofu).

The bowl of Kway was just average. The flat and broad rice sheets were soft, smooth and of the right thickness. However, I felt that the broth was not flavourful enough and was diulted.

I ordered a plate of braised pig intestines (small), pig skin, fish cakes and tau pok (fried tofu). The sweet and savoury braising sauce was excellent. The burst of sauce from the tau pok which absorbed the braising sauce made it so addictive. The braised pig intestines (small), one of my favourite item was disappointing. It was washed clean but tasted rubbery.

I do not understand why Lao San Kway Chap 老三棵汁·猪什汤  has been so highly raved about. My personal thoughts are that it was just an average kway chap stall.
